Zabbix 4.2 released

Zabbix 4.2 released

The release of the free open source monitoring system Zabbix 4.2 has taken place. Zabbix is a universal system for monitoring the performance and availability of servers, engineering and network equipment, applications, databases, virtualization systems, containers, IT services, web services.

The system implements a full cycle from collecting data, processing and converting it, analyzing the received data, and ending with storing this data, visualizing and sending alerts using escalation rules. The system also provides flexible options for expanding methods for collecting data and alerts, as well as automation options through the API. A single web interface implements centralized management of monitoring configurations and distribution of access rights to different user groups. The project code is distributed under the GPLv2 license.

Zabbix 4.2 is a new non-LTS version with a short official support period. For users who are guided by a long cycle of operation of software products, we recommend using LTS versions of the product, such as 3.0 and 4.0.

Major improvements in version 4.2:

  • Availability of official packages for the following platforms:
    • Raspberry Pi, SUSE Enterprise Linux Server 12
    • macOS agent
    • MSI build Windows agenta
    • Docker images
  • Application monitoring with high-performance data collection from Prometheus exporters and built-in PromQL support, low-level discovery is also supported
  • High-frequency monitoring for ultra-fast problem detection using throttling. Throttling allows ultra-high frequency checks without processing or storing huge amounts of data
  • Validation of input data in preprocessing against regular expressions, range of values, JSONPath and XMLPath
  • Control of Zabbix behavior on errors in preprocessing steps, now it is possible to ignore the new value, the ability to set a default value or set an arbitrary error message
  • Support for arbitrary algorithms for preprocessing using JavaScript
  • Easier low-level discovery (LLD) with support for free-form JSON data
  • Experimental support for highly efficient TimescaleDB storage with automatic partitioning
  • Easy tag management at template and host level
  • Efficient load scaling by supporting data pre-processing on the proxy side. In combination with throttling, this approach allows you to perform and process millions of checks per second without loading the central Zabbix server.
  • Flexible auto-registration of devices with filtering device names by regular expression
  • Ability to manage device names in network discovery and get device name from metric value
  • Convenient check if preprocessing is working right from the interface
  • Checking the performance of notification methods directly from the Web interface
  • Remote monitoring of internal metrics of Zabbix server and proxy (performance and health metrics of Zabbix components)
  • Beautiful e-mail messages, thanks to the presence of HTML format support
  • Support for new macros in custom URLs for better integration of maps with external systems
  • Support for animated GIF images on maps for more visible visualization of problems
  • Show the exact time when hovering the mouse over the chart
  • Convenient new filter in trigger configuration
  • Ability to mass change the parameters of metrics prototypes
  • Ability to extract data, including authorization tokens, from HTTP headers in web monitoring
  • Zabbix Sender now sends data to all IP addresses from the agent configuration file
  • The discovery rule can be a dependent metric
  • Implemented a more predictable algorithm for changing the order of widgets in the dashboard

To migrate from earlier versions, you only need to install new binaries (server and proxy) and a new interface. Zabbix will automatically perform the database update procedure.
No new agents need to be installed.

You can find a complete list of all changes in the documentation.

An article on Habré offers a more detailed description of the functionality.
