WWDC 2019: new macOS and iOS features for people with disabilities

Along with the announcement of the macOS Catalina and iOS 13 operating systems at the opening of WWDC 2019, Apple introduced new features aimed at people with disabilities. First of all, we are talking about Voice Control, which provides advanced voice control capabilities for your Mac computer, smartphone or tablet. Surely the function will be useful for everyone else in certain scenarios.

Previously, users could activate voice control in macOS in a less obvious way through the dictation function settings, while iOS provided basic capabilities through Siri. However, new technology provides a much more obvious and complete way of contactless interaction with a computer.

Voice Control offers improved dictation features, enhanced text editing capabilities, and most importantly, comprehensive commands that let you not only open apps, but also interact with them. This is greatly facilitated, as shown in the video presented, by the new ability to mark interactive interface elements with license plates or a grid overlay for subsequent selection of the corresponding button, menu item or area on the screen, for example, in maps. Of course, cues like “Correct word”, “Scroll down” or “Next field” are also supported.

iOS includes an attention tracking feature that allows the platform to understand when a user is interacting with the device. From a privacy perspective, Apple assures that neither the company nor anyone else will be able to access audio processed using Voice Control, thanks to built-in encryption as well as anonymity.

It is not yet clear whether any corresponding API is provided for developers who want to further optimize their applications for voice control. There is also no information yet about whether Voice Control supports the Russian language.

macOS Catalina also includes new features to make it easier for people with low vision. The first of them allows you to enlarge a piece of text that is hovered over while the Control button is pressed, as well as customize its font and color. And the second involves working with an additional screen, on which the application interface is displayed in a scaled form.
