A Michigan resident discovered a device near her farmhouse, which she mistook for a space satellite. It bore the names of Samsung and South Dakota-based balloon manufacturer Raven Industries, whose employees had come to collect the crashed craft.
As it turned out, it was the device of the Samsung SpaceSelfie project, launched by a South Korean company with a balloon into the stratosphere in honor of its 50th anniversary. On it was a Galaxy S10 Plus smartphone with a selfie of actress and model Cara Delevingne, which was then to be photographed against the backdrop of the Earth. As part of the action, everyone could send their selfie to the Samsung website. Some of them, selected at random, were also sent with a smartphone for shooting in the stratosphere. Whether users received their photos against the background of the Earth, taken in the stratosphere, is not yet known.
The Samsung SpaceSelfie is reportedly damaged, though no word has been given on the fate of the smartphone, which has been subjected to one of the most dramatic drop tests in recent memory.
Samsung, which apologized to the owner of the farm for the inconvenience caused, only stated that the landing of the device went according to plan in the “targeted countryside”.
