San Francisco authorities are considering a possible ban on the sale of e-cigarettes. It is expected to remain in effect until the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigates their health effects.
Officials in the city, which has already banned the sale of flavored tobacco and flavored vaporizers, said such research should have been completed before e-cigarettes hit the market.
The proposed law will be the first of its kind in the US and aims to curb the spread of the so-called "epidemic" of youth e-cigarette use.
City Attorney Dennis Herrera, one of the bill's co-sponsors, said that already "millions of children are addicted to e-cigarettes and millions will follow" if no action is taken.
He added that San Francisco, Chicago and New York sent a joint letter to the FDA calling for an investigation into the impact of e-cigarettes on public health.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of U.S. teens who admitted to using tobacco products βwithin the last 30 daysβ increased by 36% from 2017 million to 2018 million between 3,6 and 4,9. This statistic is attributed to the rise in e-cigarette use.
