Officials in the city, which has already banned the sale of flavored tobacco and flavored vaporizers, said such research should have been completed before e-cigarettes hit the market.

The proposed law will be the first of its kind in the US and aims to curb the spread of the so-called "epidemic" of youth e-cigarette use.

City Attorney Dennis Herrera, one of the bill's co-sponsors, said that already "millions of children are addicted to e-cigarettes and millions will follow" if no action is taken.

He added that San Francisco, Chicago and New York sent a joint letter to the FDA calling for an investigation into the impact of e-cigarettes on public health.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of U.S. teens who admitted to using tobacco products β€œwithin the last 30 days” increased by 36% from 2017 million to 2018 million between 3,6 and 4,9. This statistic is attributed to the rise in e-cigarette use.
