The fnt package, which implements a font manager aimed at installing additional fonts and keeping existing ones up to date, has been accepted into the Debian testing package base, which will form the basis for the Debian 12 'Bookworm' release. Besides Linux, the program can also be used on FreeBSD (a port has recently been added) and macOS. The code is written in Shell and is distributed under the MIT license.
The fnt utility is positioned as an equivalent to apt for fonts and supports a similar set of commands for installation, updates, and searching. Additionally, a command is provided for a visual preview of fonts in the console using ASCII graphics. For a higher-quality preview of available fonts, a web service has been prepared. The utility allows the installation of newer fonts present in the Debian Sid repository, as well as external fonts from the Google Web Fonts collection. A total of about 2000 fonts are offered for installation (480 from Debian Sid and 1420 from Google Web Fonts).
