Fedora Linux 43 on x86 systems, it is planned to retain the option to use only GPT (GUID Partition Table) partition tables in all Fedora installations using UEFI. This change has not yet been reviewed by the Fedora Engineering Steering Committee (FESCo), which is responsible for the technical development of the Fedora distribution. If approved, support for installing Fedora in UEFI mode on drives with MBR (Master Boot Record) partition tables will be discontinued on x86 systems, but will remain on ARM and RISC-V systems.
The reasons cited for discontinuing MBR support include poor boot reliability in such configurations, inconsistencies in MBR support across firmware, and lack of proper testing in Fedora (GRUB2 documentation recommends using GPT for UEFI). It is assumed that leaving only GPT support in the Anaconda installer on x86 systems will eliminate boot-time crashes caused by efibootmgr failures. Discontinuing MBR support will also reduce the workload on user support staff, simplify maintenance and testing.
Initially, support for MBR in UEFI mode was added to Fedora in 2019 for compatibility with cloud platforms such as AWS that do not support GPT. Cloud platforms have now gotten rid of this limitation and MBR support in this context is no longer relevant.
