Siduction 2021.3 distribution release

The release of the Siduction 2021.3 project has been formed, which develops a desktop-oriented Linux distribution built on the Debian Sid (unstable) package base. Siduction is a fork of Aptosid that spun off in July 2011. The key difference from Aptosid was the use of a newer version of KDE from the experimental Qt-KDE repository as the user environment. Available for download are builds based on KDE (2.9 GB), Xfce (2.5 GB) and LXQt (2.5 GB), as well as a minimalistic "Xorg" build based on the Fluxbox window manager (2 GB) and a "noX" build (983 MB), supplied without a graphical environment and intended for users who wish to build their own system. To enter the live session, you should use the login/password β€” β€œsiducer/live”.

Major changes:

  • Cinnamon, LXDE, and MATE desktop builds have been discontinued due to lack of developer time. The focus is now on builds of KDE, LXQt, Xfce, Xorg and noX.
  • The package base is in sync with the Debian Unstable repository as of December 23rd. Updated Linux kernel 5.15.11 and systemd 249.7. Desktops offered are KDE Plasma 5.23.4, LXQt 1.0 and Xfce 4.16.
  • Builds with all desktops for connecting to a wireless network have been switched by default to use the iwd daemon instead of wpa_supplicant. Iwd can be used alone or in conjunction with NetworkManager, systemd-networkd, and Connman. As an option, the ability to return wpa_supplicant is provided.
  • In addition to sudo for executing commands on behalf of another user, the base package includes the doas utility developed by the OpenBSD project. The new version for doas adds input completion files to bash.
  • Following the changes in Debian Sid, the distribution has moved to use the PipeWire media server instead of PulseAudio and Jack.
  • The ncdu package has been replaced with a faster alternative to gdu.
  • CopyQ clipboard manager included.
  • The Digikam photo collection management program has been removed from the distribution. As the reason, the package size is too large - 130 MB.
