The authors of The Outer Worlds took into account players with impaired color vision when creating the game

If you have some form of color vision impairment and have downloaded The Outer Worlds, perhaps your first action was to check for a colorblind option. You won't find it, but you don't need it. According to Obsidian Entertainment design director Josh Sawyer, The Outer Worlds was designed from the start to accommodate players with mild to severe color vision impairments.

Sawyer on twitter рассказалthat The Outer Worlds "was designed to be played without knowledge of color". The designer referred to the co-director of the project, Tim Cain (Tim Cain), who has a form of color vision disorder that borders on monochromatism.

Accessible Games ΠΈ Game Accessibility Guidelines (Game Accessibility Guidelines) includes recommendations and examples of how to best implement accessibility features for colorblind people. As the latter resource notes, color vision impairments come in "in varying degrees of severity, but if you design to cover XNUMX% severity, you will also cover other degrees."

Kane himself also рассказал Polygon that the UI designers of The Outer Worlds first had to create the game's interface in grayscale, and only then they were allowed to apply other colors. It is worth mentioning that this fact was announced in the article about the small text size. The project currently cannot make the text bigger, which gamers around the world are complaining about.

In 2011, shortly after Kane joined Obsidian Entertainment, Gamasutra interview he shared how his gradual loss of color vision began to affect his approach to game design:

β€œIn my family, people lose their color vision over time. I started losing mine when I was twenty years old and now I can see less than half of the color spectrum. I'm surprised how many games provide information solely in color variations, and I can't play those games," he said. "It's not at all difficult to include a number, symbol, or word in addition to color, but some games don't do this in the name of minimizing the user interface."
