“She [Stranglehold] is again ready to show herself in all her fighting glory and show the world “ballet with pistols.” It’s time to remember what it’s like to be Inspector Tequila Ian and openly fight the underworld!” GOG.com couldn’t be happier.

Stranglehold is an action game in the spirit of Max Payne: partially destructible environment, time dilation, two-handed shooting. The game implemented a system of targeted shots - enemies reacted differently when a bullet hit certain parts of the body.

From a story perspective, Stranglehold is a sequel to Hard Boiled. The game takes place in modern Hong Kong, where Inspector Tequila Yen becomes embroiled in a conflict between the triads and the Russian mafia.

Stranglehold was developed by Tiger Hill Entertainment, which was founded by John Woo in 2003. The director was directly involved in the creation of the project and even ensured that the characters’ clothes matched the source material.

Despite the relatively warm welcome (77 points out of 100 at Metacritic) to critics in 2007, Stranglehold failed to make back its $30 million budget. I had to forget about the sequel.

In 2009, the project's publisher, Midway, went bankrupt. As GOG.com explains, “the game’s return to the market was hampered by the lack of support for the DRM version of the new Windows operating systems.”
