The number of American astronauts on the ISS may be reduced

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is considering reducing the number of astronauts on the International Space Station from three to one. This move is due to delays in the preparation of SpaceX and Boeing spacecraft, as well as a reduction in the frequency of flights of Russian Soyuz spacecraft. This was stated in the report by NASA Chief Inspector Paul Martin.

The number of American astronauts on the ISS may be reduced

β€œPrior to the start of crewed flights, NASA will likely have to reduce the number of astronauts on the ISS from three to one starting in the spring of 2020,” Mr. Martin said in the report.

He also noted that such a decision could be made due to problems that have arisen related to the development of systems for flights into outer space by SpaceX and Boeing. It is noted that company engineers are currently experiencing difficulties associated with the development of engines, launch aborts and parachute systems. Another reason for the reduction in the number of astronauts may be a decrease in the intensity of use of Soyuz spacecraft.

The document states that if only one astronaut remains on the ISS, his tasks will be limited to technical operations and repairs. This would leave insufficient time to conduct scientific research and demonstrate technologies related to NASA's future space exploration goals.

According to published data, over 20 years, 85 manned flights to the ISS were carried out using Russian Soyuz spacecraft and the American Space Shuttle. In total, 239 people from different countries visited the station during this time.
