ESET: 99% of mobile malware targets Android devices

The company ESET, which develops software solutions for information security, has published a report for 2019, which examines the most common threats and vulnerabilities on Android and iOS mobile platforms.

ESET: 99% of mobile malware targets Android devices

It's no secret that Android is currently the most widely used mobile operating system in the world. It accounts for up to 76% of the global market, while the share of iOS is 22%. The growing user base and the diversity of the Android ecosystem make the Google platform extremely attractive to hackers.

An ESET report states that up to 90% of Android devices are not updated to the latest version of the operating system, which fixes the vulnerabilities found. This is one of the main reasons why 99% of mobile malware targets Android devices.

The largest number of detected malware for Android was recorded in Russia (15,2%), Iran (14,7%) and Ukraine (7,5%). Thanks to the efforts of Google, the total number of malware detected in 2019 decreased by 9% compared to the previous year. Despite this, dangerous apps regularly appear in the official digital content store Play Store, as they skillfully disguise themselves as safe programs, thanks to which they manage to pass Google's verification.

In the second most popular mobile platform, iOS, several dangerous vulnerabilities were identified last year. The total number of malware detected for iOS increased by 98% compared to 2018 and by 158% compared to 2017. Despite the impressive growth, the number of new types of malware is not that great. Most of the malware that targets iOS devices was detected in China (44%), the US (11%) and India (5%).
