The European Commission reprimanded Google, Facebook and Twitter for not doing enough to combat fake news

According to the European Commission, American Internet giants Google, Facebook and Twitter are not taking sufficient measures to combat fake news surrounding the election campaign ahead of the European Parliament elections, which will take place from May 23 to 26 in the 28 countries of the European Union.

As stated in the statement, foreign interference in elections to the European Parliament and local elections in a number of countries is now one of the main concerns of the EU government. However, according to the European Union's chief executive, in April Google, Facebook and Twitter again failed to live up to the voluntary commitments they made last fall to combat the spread of fake news. According to the position of EC representatives, companies should make more efforts to make the most effective use of their services, including advertising.

According to European officials, the information they receive is still not enough to independently and accurately assess how the policies of leading Internet companies are helping to reduce the level of disinformation on the Internet.

Note that this is not the first time that the European Commission has expressed dissatisfaction with the alleged inaction of Google, Facebook and Twitter in combating false information on the Internet. Similar claims were made, for example, at the end of February. Then the largest Internet platforms were also accused of failing to provide information about what measures were being taken to combat fake news.
