The Street Fighter franchise has always been quite recognizable, but one day it found itself in a difficult situation. After the release of Street Fighter III and its spin-offs, producer Yoshinori Ono was unsure of where to take the series, and therefore considered all possible further developments for Street Fighter IV.
In an interview at EGX 2019, Ono told Eurogamer that at one point he considered making a game with a turn-based combat system.
βI had an idea that I thought was revolutionary to turn it into a more turn-based simulation,β Ono said. βSo you will make the moves you want and put them together like blocks, and they will work automatically.β But obviously we didn't end up doing that."
Itβs good that this didnβt happen, otherwise the genre would be completely different now. Street Fighter IV is largely responsible for the modern wave of fighting game popularity, both in terms of the Street Fighter series itself and the genre as a whole.
In an interview with Yoshinori Ono, he mentioned that Capcom executives were not satisfied with the commercial results of Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike and Capcom Vs. SNK. He said the company was 99,9% against the idea of ββStreet Fighter IV, and he had to convince then-R&D head Keiji Inafune to at least give it a try.
