The Free Software Foundation has published a petition calling for the release of the Windows 7 code.

Due to the end of support for Windows 14 on January 7, the Free Software Foundation addressed petition to Microsoft calling for Windows 7 to be released as free software to enable the community to learn and improve the operating system. It is noted that Microsoft has already transferred some of its programs to the category of free software, and also that since support has already been completed, then Microsoft has nothing to lose.

According to the Open Source Foundation, the end of support for Windows 7 provides an excellent opportunity for Microsoft to release the source code, thus apologizing for the sins of Windows 7, including hindering learning, violating user privacy and security. The aim of the campaign is сбор at least 7777 signatures (at the time of writing the news has already collected 5007 signatures).

The appeal consists of three points:

  • Translation of Windows 7 into the category of open source software. According to the Foundation, the life cycle of this OS should not end, Windows 7 can still be used by the community for education and receive improvements in the process of joint development.
  • Respect the freedom and privacy of users, do not forcefully transfer them to new versions of Windows.
  • Providing evidence that Microsoft really respects users and their freedom, instead of words and marketing materials.
