Photo of the day: an unusual look at the galaxy Messier 90

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) continues to release stunning images from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.

Another such image captures Messier 90. This is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Virgo, located at a distance of approximately 60 million light-years from us.

The published image clearly shows the structure of Messier 90 - the central bulge and sleeves. Observations suggest that the named galaxy is approaching us, and not moving away from the Milky Way.

The presented image has an unusual feature - a stepped section in the upper left corner. The presence of this detail is due to the peculiarities of the operation of the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) camera, which was used to acquire the image.

The fact is that the WFPC2 instrument used by Hubble from 1994 to 2010 contained four detectors, one of which provided a larger increase than the other three. Therefore, when combining the data, an adjustment was required, which led to the appearance of a β€œladder” in the photographs.
