FuryBSD - New FreeBSD Live Build with Xfce Desktop

Experimental builds of the new FuryBSD Live distribution based on FreeBSD 12.1 and the Xfce desktop have begun. The project was founded by Joe Maloney of iXsystems, which oversees TrueOS and FreeNAS, but FuryBSD is positioned as a community-supported independent project not affiliated with iXsystems.

The live image can be burned to either DVD or USB Flash. There is a stationary installation mode by transferring the Live environment with all changes to disk (using bsdinstall and installing on a partition with ZFS). UnionFS is used to ensure recording in the Live system. Unlike TrueOS-based builds, the FuryBSD project is designed to be tightly integrated with FreeBSD and leverage the core project's work, but optimize settings and environments for desktop use.

Future plans include preparing tools for loading proprietary graphics and wireless drivers, creating a tool for replicating and restoring ZFS partitions, high-quality print support, ensuring changes are saved between restarts when working from a USB drive, support for connecting to Active Directory and LDAP, creation of an additional repository, work to enhance security.
