GitLab stops using "master" name by default

Following GitHub and Bitbucket, collaborative development platform GitLab has announced that it will no longer use the default word "master" for master branches in favor of "main." The term “master” has recently been considered politically incorrect, reminiscent of slavery and is perceived by some community members as an insult.

The change will be made both in the GitLab.com service and after updating the GitLab platform for local use. The new name will be used when creating new projects. The April 13.11 release of GitLab 22 will include an optional master branch name change flag, but new projects will continue to use the master name by default. In GitLab 14.0, expected on May 22, the default name for all projects created will be main.

If existing systems are updated to GitLab 14.0, the name main will also be used by default in new projects created via the web interface. If you use continuous integration systems, changes in scripts and settings of hard-coded links to master may be required. If desired, users will be able to revert to the master name through a setting that is responsible for the default branch name.
