Google Assistant lets you send reminders to friends and family

Google will add a new feature to its Assistant that will allow you to assign reminders to other users, as long as those people are part of Assistant's group of trusted users. This feature is aimed primarily at families - it will work through the Family Group feature - so that, for example, a father can send reminders to his children or spouse, and this reminder will appear on the latter's smartphone or smart display via Google Assistant. But the company assures that friends or trusted neighbors can also use the function.

The process is quite simple. You can create a voice or text reminder and set it to display at a certain time when the recipient is in a certain place. You can even set reminders to repeat and check the history of notifications that have been sent or received to other users. This works using the usual β€œOk, Google” command.

Google says the idea isn't to allow people to constantly pester friends or family members with ridiculous requests. The company envisions these reminders as a way to send notes of encouragement or humor in an asynchronous or scheduled manner. For example, using this approach, you can wish someone good luck in a big deal at a designated time or place if the person cannot send a regular SMS message or wants the message to arrive exactly on time. However, Google will allow you to block people who abuse the functionality: the company says the blocking exists primarily to prevent kids from spamming their parents.

There are several requirements for this feature to work. You need to create a family group on the Internet at family.google.comto manage reminders on your phone and smart display. Then, to send someone a reminder, you need the person to be in your Google contacts list. The company says the feature will go live next month, starting in select English-speaking regions, including the US, UK and Australia.
