Google Docs will receive support for native Microsoft Office formats

One of the main problems when working with Microsoft Office files in Google Docs will soon be gone. The search giant announced the addition of native support for native Word, Excel and PowerPoint formats to its platform.

Google Docs will receive support for native Microsoft Office formats

Previously, for data editing, collaboration, commenting, and more, you had to convert documents to the Google format, although you could view them directly. Now this will change. The list of formats looks like this:

  • Word: .doc, .docx, .dot;
  • Excel: .xls, .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlt;
  • PowerPoint: .ppt, .pptx, .pps, .pot.

Reportedly, the new feature will initially be available to corporate users of G Suite, for them the opportunity will be launched within a couple of weeks. Then it will become available to ordinary users.

According to David Thacker, vice president of product management for G Suite, users work with various formats and data, so the emergence of such support is quite expected. This will allow you to work with Office files directly from G Suite without worrying about converting them.

Tucker also noted that users will be able to use the G Suite artificial intelligence system to check grammar in the text. By the way, similar features have previously appeared in Dropbox, where users of the Business version can use the function of editing documents, tables and images directly in the cloud interface.

Thus, Microsoft and Google products are becoming more and more compatible with each other. However, given the release of test versions of Microsoft Edge based on Chromium, this does not look surprising. Note that this browser is available for download and is actively updated, acquiring new features.
