Jonathon F has closed access to a number of popular PPA repositories

Author of a popular set of PPA repositories Jonathonf, in which assemblies of new versions of various programs are formed, has limited access to some PPAs as a sign protest against the policy of companies that use the labor of enthusiasts to implement commercial projects and act like parasites, only consuming the results of other people’s work, without any return on their part.

Jonathon F is offended that they are trying to manipulate him and use him as free labor to solve their business problems. One of the companies asked to recreate some packages necessary to continue uninterrupted operation, but refused to pay for the work done, citing the fact that there was no budget allocated for this.

Jonathon F commented on similar actions: β€œYou've been using my free resources to support your business for years? Have you asked me to do certain work that is directly related to supporting your business? You don't have the budget to pay for the work and you expect me to work for free? No thanks.".
Then I decided to restrict access to some repositories that were in demand by commercial companies.

The reason given for closing public access is the constant and ongoing abuse of companies that use repositories for commercial gain, with a blatant disregard for the work required to maintain these repositories. For users Jonathon F had previously communicated with, he suggested that they send him an ID to Launchpad to open access to private PPAs.

Companies are invited to become a sponsor of an interested PPA in the form of a direct or indirect contribution to the development of an upstream project, after which this PPA will be returned to the public with a note about the sponsor. The interest here is not so much in the desire to receive funding, but in the intention to make companies understand that although open source software is freely available, it also has a certain price, and companies should contribute to the common cause in some way, for example through donations , sponsorship, employment of developers, allowing employees to spend 20% of their time participating in the development of open source projects.
