KDE at Google Summer of Code 2019

As part of the next program, 24 students will work on improvements that will be included in the next versions of the libraries, shell and applications of KDE. Here's what's planned:

  • create a lightweight WYSIWYG Markdown editor with pagination, previews and color schemes;
  • teach the Cantor math package to work with Jupyter Notebook (data processing application);
  • in Krita, the Undo / Redo mechanism will be redesigned to use full-fledged snapshots;
  • also Krita may be ported to mobile devices, primarily to Android;
  • add a new brush using an SVG file as a source;
  • finally, Krita implements the "magnetic lasso" tool, which was lost during the transition from Qt3 to Qt4;
  • for the digiKam photo collection manager, it has been traditionally improving and activating face recognition for many years now;
  • he will also get a magic brush to retouch unwanted areas by tiling it with similar areas;
  • Labplot statistical analysis package more data processing functions and the ability to create mixed reports;
  • the system of integration with mobile devices KDE Connect will come to Windows and macOS in the form of full-fledged ports;
  • Falkon will learn how to synchronize browser data across devices;
  • major improvements in Rocs - IDE for graph theory;
  • in the set of children's educational programs Gcompris, it will be possible to create your own data sets for tasks;
  • KIO file systems will now be mounted as full-fledged file systems through the KIOFuse mechanism (i.e. KIO will work for all software, not just KDE);
  • the SDDM session manager will get the settings synchronized with the user's desktop settings;
  • Kiphu, a flat and 3D plotting utility, will receive many fixes, will cease to be a beta, and will become part of KDE Edu;
  • Okular will improve the JavaScript interpreter;
  • interaction between Nextcloud and Plasma Mobile will be improved, in particular, synchronization and distribution of data;
  • The KDE ISO Image Writer utility for writing images to usb drives will be released for Linux, Windows and maybe macOS.
