Microsoft unveils new Edge browser logo that no longer looks like IE

Microsoft has updated the logo for its Chromium-based Edge browser. The software giant originally introduced its Edge icon over four years ago, and it was clearly a logo that tried to maintain continuity with Internet Explorer. The new Microsoft logo has been revealed as part of a new surf mini-game hidden in the latest versions of Edge in early builds of Canary. It looks like a wave and clearly draws on the Fluent Design style, which also features the new Office icons.

The logo also plays on the letter "E", but it no longer looks like Internet Explorer and looks much more modern as a result. Microsoft has clearly decided to break with tradition by switching to the Chrome engine in its Edge browser, and it will be interesting to know why the company chose this particular design.

The Edge icon was discovered by enthusiasts during an elaborate Easter egg hunt, where Microsoft employees posted cryptic clues in a series of puzzles and images. By solving puzzles, users were even able to render the Edge icon as a XNUMXD object, thanks to the Obj model code that was hidden in the image. All of this led to a series of words found in seven clues, which were then injected into a Javascript feature on the Microsoft Edge Insider website. Finally, by executing this code, the final instructions were received to launch the hidden surf game (edge://surf /), after which the new logo can be seen.

The Secret Surfing Game is very similar to SkiFree, the classic skiing game released in 1991 as part of the Microsoft Entertainment Pack 3 for Windows. The player uses WASD on the keyboard to navigate, avoiding obstacles and collecting speed bonuses and shields along the way.

Now it remains to wait for Microsoft to release the final version of its Edge Chromium browser. The beta version was released back in August, and recently a stable build appeared on the network. Microsoft is hosting the Ignite conference in Orlando next week, and with a new logo unveiled, chances are we'll hear more about a launch date soon.
