Microsoft talks about innovations in DirectX 12: lightweight ray tracing and detail depending on distance

Microsoft as part of the Windows Insider preview early access program presented updated DirectX 12 APIs and talked in detail about the innovations. These features will appear in a release next year and include three main features.

The first possibility concerns ray tracing. In DirectX 12, it was originally, but now it has been expanded. Specifically, additional shaders have been added to the existing PSO ray tracing object (Pipeline State Object). This improves work efficiency.

Next, we should mention the technology of adaptive algorithms ExecuteIndirect. According to the description, this feature allows you to determine the number of rays on the GPU execution timeline. Finally, it became possible to use a lightweight version of tracing.

The company also worked with geometry. In the DirectX 12 API, Microsoft has added support for Mesh Shaders. This feature is called DirectX Sampler. It allows you to determine which textures are most often available and should remain in memory. As a result, only the data that is needed here and now is stored in the video memory.

Thus, the innovation will provide an opportunity to get rid of annoying long downloads of virtual worlds. This is the so-called texture streaming technology.

All this in more detail described on the Microsoft Developer Blog. At the same time, we note that a few days ago, AMD positively spoke out on this topic and hinted at the imminent appearance of new features in Radeon products. Obviously, they will already appear in the new top-end graphics cards, which are expected to be released in 2020. They are credited with, among other things, hardware support for ray tracing.
