Microsoft: With Project Scarlett, we're going for broke

Xbox CEO Phil Spencer remembers the beginning of this console generation very well. Microsoft, which dominated the previous generation, entered the race with a more expensive but less powerful product and a unclear message about DRM.

Microsoft: With Project Scarlett, we're going for broke

The company has spent the last few years correcting the mistakes of that era, but has acknowledged that the battle for this generation's dominance has long been won by Sony. However, when the next generation comes out, Spencer hopes it will be a different story.

β€œWe've learned our lesson from the Xbox One generation and we won't fall behind on power or price,” Spencer told The Verge at X019. - If you remember the beginning of this generation, we were a hundred dollars more expensive and yes, we were less powerful. And we started Project Scarlett with this team with the goal of gaining success in the market."

However, Spencer also wants the next Xbox to stand out beyond price and power - offering services and features not available on other platforms. β€œWe’re going all in,” he said. β€œWe're betting everything on Project Scarlett, and I want to compete, I want to compete the right way, so we're focused on cross-platform play and backwards compatibility.”

VG247 also spoke with the head of marketing for Microsoft's gaming division, Aaron Greenberg, who confirmed Microsoft's emphasis on high frame rates in the next generation.

β€œThe team that designed the Xbox One X is designing Project Scarlett,” Greenberg said. β€œWe are very proud to have designed the most powerful console in the world.” We want to continue to not only focus on power, but also add things like speed, increased frame rates with a more powerful processor, and we want to bring those capabilities to our game developers.

We meet with game developers, we get together and meet with them, actually, right now, and they have devkits. We'll hear more from them over time, but so far the feedback has been that they're very excited about our plans and we'll have more to say - I mean next year will be dedicated to Project Scarlett."

Xbox Project Scarlett and PlayStation 5 will be released during the holiday season 2020. β€œWith a custom-designed AMD processor, fast GDDR6 RAM, and next-generation solid-state drive (SSD), Project Scarlett will give game developers the power they need to bring their creative ideas to life. "Thousands of games spanning four generations of consoles will look and play best on Project Scarlett," the console's description reads.
