Mobileye to build major research center in Jerusalem by 2022

The Israeli company Mobileye came to the attention of the press even at the time when it supplied electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla with components for active driver assistance systems. However, in 2016, after one of the first fatal traffic accidents, in which Tesla's obstacle recognition system was seen to be involved, the company's paths parted with a terrible scandal. In 2017, Intel acquired Mobileye for a record $15 billion, retaining quite a few preferences compared to other acquired companies. Mobileye retained the right to use its own trademark, there were no staff cuts or relocations, and the research center in Jerusalem became a place of regular pilgrimage for senior Intel executives. Local engineers took particular pride in teaching automation to drive cars in difficult Jerusalem traffic conditions.

According to the publication The Jerusalem Post, a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony was held this week in Jerusalem for a new building complex that will house at least 2022 Mobileye professionals by October 2700. The ceremony was attended by Israeli Prime Minister, Israeli Economy Minister, Mayor of Jerusalem and Mobileye founder Amnon Shashua, who is now the CEO of an Intel subsidiary.

Mobileye Research Center will rise eight floors above the ground, in this part the office space will reach 50 square meters, and another 78 square meters of space will be located underground. Most likely, this layout is dictated not so much by security considerations as by the high cost of land in Jerusalem and the limited area allocated for construction. In addition to 56 rooms for meetings and staff accommodation, the buildings of the new complex will include several laboratories with a total area of 1400 square meters.

Last quarter, Mobileye managed to increase revenue by 16% to $201 million. On the scale of Intel's business, this is not so much, but company representatives like to remind you of the number of vehicles that are already equipped with Mobileye components - recently their total number exceeded 40 million units. In addition, the company is proud of the high safety ratings of the respective models. In 2018, according to the results of EuroNCAP tests, 16 car models received the highest score for safety, of which 12 were equipped with Mobileye components. In cooperation with Volkswagen, the company is going to launch a self-driving taxi service in Israel this year. Intel's closest ally for Autopilot is BMW, but Mobileye is partnering with dozens of vehicle and component manufacturers.
