Testing of Fedora builds with a web-based installer has begun

The Fedora Project announced the formation of experimental builds of Fedora 37, equipped with a redesigned Anaconda installer, which replaces the interface based on the GTK library with a web interface. The new interface allows interaction through a web browser, which greatly improves the convenience of remote control of the installation, which cannot be compared with the old solution based on the VNC protocol. The size of the iso image is 2.3 GB (x86_64).

The development of the new installer has not yet been completed and not all the planned features have been implemented. As innovations are added and bugs are fixed, it is planned to release updated builds that reflect the progress of work on the project. Users are invited to evaluate the new interface and provide constructive comments on how to improve it. Of the already available features, there is a language selection form, an interface for selecting a disk for installation, automatic partitioning on a disk, automatic installation of Fedora 37 Workstation on a created partition, a screen with an overview of the installation options selected, a screen with an installation progress indicator, built-in help.

The web interface is based on the components of the Cockpit project, which is already used in Red Hat products for configuring and managing servers. Cockpit was chosen as a well-established solution, for which there is a backend for interacting with the installer (Anaconda DBus). The use of the Cockpit has also made it possible to achieve uniformity and unify the various control components of the system. When redesigning the interface, the results of previous work done to increase the modularity of the installer were used - the main part of Anaconda was converted into modules that interact via the DBus API, and the new interface uses the ready-made API without internal processing.
