New builds of the Raspberry Pi OS distribution. Overclocking Raspberry Pi 5 boards to 3.14 GHz

The developers of the Raspberry Pi project have published updated builds of the Raspberry Pi OS 2024-03-15 (Raspbian) distribution, based on the Debian 12 package base. For Raspberry Pi 4/5 boards, the Wayfire composite manager based on the Wayland protocol is used by default, and for other boards - X server with Openbox window manager. The Pipewire media server is used to control audio. There are about 35 thousand packages available in the repository.

Three assemblies have been prepared for download - a shortened one (404 MB) for server systems, with a basic desktop (1.1 GB) and a full one with an additional set of applications (2.8 GB), available for 32- and 64-bit architectures. Additionally, an update has been created for the old edition of Raspberry Pi OS (Legacy), based on the Linux 6.1 kernel and the Debian 11 package base.

Key changes:

  • Synchronization with the current Debian 12 package database has been completed.
  • The Linux kernel has been updated to version 6.6.20.
  • Updated firmware files for Raspberry Pi boards.
  • The logic for processing audio streams has been changed - when connecting or disconnecting other audio devices, the current playback is no longer interrupted.
  • Improved work with the Orca screen reader, which has been updated to version 45.
  • Removed outdated fbturbo video driver.
  • The standard configurator has added the ability to adjust screen resolution when working in headless mode.
  • Improved handling of power button presses on Raspberry Pi 5 boards.
  • Pop-up windows called from the panel have been replaced with regular windows.
  • The session termination handler ensures that all user processes are closed upon logout.
  • The Wayvnc VNC server has been updated and brought under systemd control, with increased compatibility with various VNC clients.
  • Implemented hiding the sound indicator in the system tray if there are no sound devices.
  • When performing drag-and-drop operations, a different mouse cursor is displayed.
  • Added support for EEPROM update to raspi-config.
  • Speed up menu opening for Bluetooth and network management.
  • Improved display of widgets when using a dark theme.
  • Improved compatibility with alternative window managers
  • Chromium 122.0.6261.89 and Firefox 123 browsers have been updated.

New builds of the Raspberry Pi OS distribution. Overclocking Raspberry Pi 5 boards to 3.14 GHz

Additionally, it can be noted that it is possible to overclock Raspberry Pi 5 boards by increasing the clock frequency of the CPU from 2.4 GHz to 3.14 GHz. Initially, the firmware did not allow increasing the frequency above 3 GHz, but in the latest firmware update this limitation has been removed and the board can now be set to values above 3 GHz. Judging by user reviews, stable operation during stress testing is ensured by setting the frequency to 3.14 GHz and using active cooling. At higher values, failures begin to occur.
