Galaxy Note 20 Ultra tests published: Exynos 990 is a complete failure compared to Snapdragon 865+

As you know, Samsung equipped its flagship smartphone Galaxy Note 20 Ultra with a Snapdragon 865+ single-chip system, but such devices are sold only in the US and China. The global version of the device received the Samsung Exynos 990 chip. But what is the real difference between these processors?

The Phone Arena resource tested both versions of the Note 20 Ultra in popular test packages - everywhere the Exynos 990 version is significantly inferior to the version with the Snapdragon 865+ chip. And while both variants of the smartphone are still powerful enough to handle any task, the 865+'s benefits aren't limited to speed.

Even compared to the Snapdragon 865, Qualcomm's new chip brings higher peak clock speeds for the most powerful core, noticeably faster graphics, even wider support for 5G networking standards, and the latest Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6E standards.

Wi-Fi 6E on the Snapdragon 865+ means the Note 20 Ultra is capable of up to 6GHz. It will function like regular Wi-Fi 6 at 5GHz, but with more channels that won't interfere with each other or overlap. According to the Wi-Fi Alliance, Wi-Fi 6E supports 14 additional 80MHz channels and 7 additional 160MHz channels to reduce interference when wireless networks are congested.

New features of Bluetooth 5.2 compared to Bluetooth 5.1:

  • better audio codec with reduced power consumption;
  • independent synchronization of fully wireless headsets and broadcasting of audio streams to multiple listeners in different languages;
  • multiple applications can communicate with the Bluetooth Low Energy device at the same time, reducing latency and interference.

In addition, it is necessary to take into account throttling when the chip is heated: versions with the Exynos 990 chip show themselves noticeably worse in this respect than the versions based on the Snapdragon 865+. And no more than 7 hours of battery life when playing YouTube for a modern smartphone with a 4500 mAh battery and an OLED screen is not enough.

Overall, both synthetic and real-life battery tests give the Snapdragon 20+-powered Note 865 Ultra models an edge over the Exynos 990-powered variant. Samsung will either stop producing separate versions or upgrade its Exynos chips to the level of a direct competitor.
