The second closest black hole to Earth has been discovered, and it turned out to be record-breakingly large.

Surprisingly, an unusually large stellar-mass black hole was hiding relatively close to Earth. The discovery was made based on data from the European astrometric satellite Gaia. A black hole with a mass of 33 solar masses was discovered in a binary system along with a giant star. It is the largest such object discovered in the Milky Way and is the second closest black hole to Earth in our galaxy. Artist's representation of the Gaia BH3 system. Image source: ESA
