The first batch of Russian electronic passports in the amount of 100 pieces will be manufactured in the first half of 2020, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Maxim Akimov said at a meeting with President Vladimir Putin.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the project to provide Russians with a new generation identity card will be implemented in two forms: in the form of a plastic card with a Russian chip and a mobile application, "which will accompany a citizen where special confirmation of the legal significance of actions is not required."

To introduce innovations, according to Akimov, it will be necessary to modernize the IT infrastructure, primarily in the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The vice-premier also asked the president's permission to hold a nationwide competition in the first half of next year to select the best identity document design. β€œSince, after all, a citizen’s passport is, in general, also one of the symbols of the state,” Maxim Akimov explained. He emphasized that the competition will allow choosing a modern design that people will support.
