The Debian project discusses the possibility of supporting multiple init systems

Sam Hartman, the Debian project leader, while trying to sort out the disagreements between the maintainers of the elogind (the interface for running GNOME 3 without systemd) and libsystemd packages, caused by a conflict between these packages and the recent refusal of the release team to include elogind in the testing branch, admitted the ability to support multiple init systems in the distribution.

If project members vote to diversify init systems, all maintainers will be involved in working together to solve this problem, or special responsible developers will be assigned to work on this problem, and maintainers will no longer be able to ignore an alternative init system, remain silent or drag out the process.
