Lamp manufacturer Philips Hue announces light sources for data transfer rates up to 250 Mbps

Signify, formerly Philips Lighting and manufacturer of Hue smart lights, has announced a new series of Li-Fi data lamps called Truelifi. They are capable of transmitting data to devices such as laptops at speeds up to 150 Mbps using light waves rather than the radio signals used in 4G or Wi-Fi networks. The product range will consist of both new light sources and transceivers that can be integrated into existing lighting equipment.

This technology can also be used to wirelessly connect two fixed points at data rates up to 250 Mbps.

Signify initially targets professional markets such as office buildings and hospitals rather than the home, where it has the potential to reach a much wider audience.

Li-Fi technology has been around for years, but is still not widely used. Most Internet-connected devices such as laptops and smartphones require an external adapter to receive data over Li-Fi, and even then the signal may be blocked when the receiver is in the shade.

To receive a Li-Fi signal from Truelifi products, Signify said, you will need to connect a USB dongle to your laptop or other device.
