Unity Game Engine Developers Announce Unity Editor for GNU/Linux

Unity Technologies announced about the formation of a preliminary release of the editor for creating games Unity Editor for GNU/Linux. The issue is formed after several years of publication of unofficial experimental builds. Now the company plans to provide official support for Linux.

It is noted that the range of supported operating systems is expanding due to the growth in demand for Unity in various fields, from the gaming and film industries to the automotive industry and transport management. For testing, a preliminary version of the editor for Ubuntu 16.04/18.04 and CentOS 7 is proposed (installation via unityhub), reviews of which are accepted in Unity forum. Full editor support for Linux is expected in the 2019.3 release of Unity.

Suggested editor build available to all users of Personal (free), Plus and Pro licenses starting with Unity 2019.1. The developers intend to bring the stability and reliability of the Linux release to the highest possible level, therefore, they focused on ensuring that Ubuntu 16.04/18.04 or CentOS 7 with the GNOME desktop on top of the X11 server runs on systems with x86-64 architecture, NVIDIA proprietary driver or AMD open driver from Mesa. In the future, it is possible to expand the officially supported Linux environments.

Note that this is not the first time that serious game-related programs or development systems have been ported to GNU/Linux. Formerly Valve initiated Proton project for running Steam games on GNU/Linux. This is expected to extend the scope of GNU/Linux to gaming PCs as well.
