Tails 4.2 distribution release

Submitted by release of a specialized distribution Tails 4.2 (The Amnesic Incognito Live System), based on the Debian package base and designed to provide anonymous access to the network. Anonymous exit to Tails is provided by the Tor system. All connections, except traffic through the Tor network, are blocked by default by the packet filter. Encryption is used to store user data in the save user data between runs mode. Ready for download iso image (1.1 GB) capable of working in Live mode.

All changes:

  • Work has been done to improve the automatic update installation system. If previously, if necessary, updating a system that had not been updated for a long time required a phased update using intermediate releases (for example, when moving from Tails 3.12 to Tails 3.16, you first had to update the system to Tails 3.14, and only then to 3.16), then starting with the release of Tails 4.2, possibility of direct automatic updating immediately to the latest version. Additionally, manual upgrade input is now only required when migrating to a new significant branch (for example, will be required when migrating to Tails 5.0 in 2021). Reduced memory consumption when performing automatic updates and optimized the size of downloaded data.
  • The composition includes several new utilities that may be useful to users of the service SecureDrop, which allows you to anonymously transfer documents to publications and journalists. In particular, the package includes PDF Redact Tools for cleaning metadata from PDF documents, OCR Tesseract for converting images to text, and FFmpeg for recording and converting audio and video.
  • When you launch the KeePassX password manager, the ~/Persistent/keepassx.kdbx database is opened by default, but if this file is missing, it is excluded from the list of recently used databases.
