Release of KDE Applications 19.04

The next version of the KDE project suite of applications has been released, including more than 150 bug fixes, many new features and improvements. Work continues on snap packages, there are now several dozen of them.

Dolphin File Manager:

  • learned to show thumbnails for MS Office documents, epub and fb2 e-books, Blender projects and PCX files;
  • when opening a new tab, places it immediately after the currently active one, and it also receives input focus;
  • makes it possible to choose which panel to close in the β€œTwo Panels” mode;
  • got a smarter display for different folders - for example, in Downloads, by default, files are grouped and sorted by date added;
  • improved interaction with tags - they can now be set and deleted via the context menu;
  • improved working with new versions of the SMB protocol;
  • got a bunch of bug fixes and memory leaks.

Improvements in Kdenlive video editor:

  • the artboard has been rewritten in QML;
  • when a clip is placed on the editing table, audio and video are automatically distributed over different tracks;
  • the artboard also now supports keyboard navigation;
  • the ability to overlay voice became available for recording sound;
  • support for external BlackMagic monitors has been returned;
  • Fixed many issues and improved interaction.

Changes in Okular document viewer:

  • added scaling settings to the print dialog;
  • viewing and verification of digital signatures for PDF are available;
  • implemented editing of LaTeX documents in TexStudio;
  • improved touch navigation in presentation mode;
  • multiline hyperlinks in Markdown now display correctly.

What's new in the KMail email client:

  • spell checking via languagetools and grammalecte;
  • phone number recognition for direct calling via KDE Connect;
  • there is a setting for launching in the system tray without opening the main window;
  • improved Markdown support;
  • Receiving mail via IMAP no longer freezes when you lose your login;
  • Some performance and stability improvements in the Akonadi backend.

Kate text editor:

  • now shows all invisible separators, not just some;
  • learned how to disable static transfer for individual documents;
  • received fully functional context menus for files and tabs;
  • displays the built-in terminal by default;
  • became more polished in interface and behavior.

In the terminal emulator Konsole:

  • you can open a new tab by clicking the mouse wheel on an empty space on the tab bar;
  • All tabs display a close button by default;
  • The profile settings dialog has been significantly improved;
  • the default color scheme is Breeze;
  • Problems with displaying bold fonts have been resolved!
  • Improved display of the underline cursor, as well as lines and other symbols.

What the Gwenview image viewer can boast of:

  • Full support for touch screens, including gestures!
  • Full support for HiDPI screens!
  • Improved handling of the Back and Forward mouse buttons;
  • the program has learned to work with Krita files;
  • you can set the size to 512 pixels for thumbnails;
  • minor interface and interaction improvements.

Changes to Spectacle Screenshot Utility:

  • The option for selecting an arbitrary area has been expanded - thus, you can save the selection template until the program is closed;
  • you can configure the behavior of an already launched utility when you press PrtScr;
  • Compression level selection available for lossy formats;
  • it became possible to set a template for naming screenshot files;
  • You are no longer prompted to choose between the current screen and all screens if there is only one screen on the system;
  • operability in the Wayland environment is ensured.

Also, the release of KDE Apps 19.04 includes a number of new features, improvements, fixes in programs such as KOrganizer, Kitinerary (this is a new travel assistant, an extension for Kontact), Lokalize, KmPlot, Kolf, etc.
