RIPE has allocated the last free IPv4 block

Regional Internet registrar RIPE NCC, which distributes IP addresses in Europe, Middle and Central Asia, объявил about the distribution of the last available block of IPv4 addresses. In 2012, R.I.P.E. embarked on to the distribution of the last /8 block of addresses (about 17 million addresses) and reduced the maximum size of the allocated subnet to /22 (1024 addresses). Yesterday the last /22 block was allocated and RIPE has no free IPv4 addresses left.

IPv4 subnets will now be allocated exclusively from the pool of returned address blocks, which is replenished by closed organizations that owned IPv4 addresses, voluntary transfer of unused blocks, or withdrawal of subnets after the closure of LIR accounts. Addresses from the pool of returned blocks will be issued in order queue blocks not exceeding 256 (/24) addresses. Applications for placement in the queue are accepted only from LIRs who have not previously received an IPv4 address (there are currently 11 LIRs in the queue).

It is noted that the need for IPv4 among operators amounts to millions of addresses. Active implementation of address translators (CG-NAT) and the IPv4 address resale market that has emerged in recent years are only temporary compromises that do not solve the global problem with the shortage of IPv4 addresses. Without widespread adoption of IPv6, the growth of the global network may be limited not by technical problems or lack of investment, but by a simple lack of unique network identifiers.

On According to, based on statistics of requests to Google services, the share of IPv6 is approaching 30%, while a year ago this figure was 21%, and two years ago - 18%. The highest degree of IPv6 use is observed in Belgium (49.8%), Germany (44%), Greece (43%), Malaysia (39%), India (38%), France (35%), USA (35%). In Russia, the number of IPv6 users is estimated at 4.26%, in Ukraine - 2.13%, in the Republic of Belarus - 0.03%, in Kazakhstan - 0.02%.

On Statistics from Cisco, the share of routable IPv6 prefixes is 33.54%. The number of IPv6 users in the Cisco reports roughly matches Google's statistics, but additionally provides information about the degree of IPv6 adoption in the operator infrastructure. In Belgium, the share of IPv6 implementation is 63%, Germany - 60%, Greece - 58%, Malaysia - 56%, India - 52%, France - 54%, USA - 50%. In Russia, the IPv6 implementation rate is at 23%, in Ukraine - 19%, in the Republic of Belarus - 22%, in Kazakhstan - 17%.

Among the most active network operators using IPv6 stand out
T-Mobile USA - IPv6 adoption rate 95%, RELIANCE JIO INFOCOMM - 90%, Verizon Wireless - 85%, AT&T Wireless - 78%, Comcast - 71%.
The number of Alexa Top 1000 sites accessible directly via IPv6 is 23.7%.
