It began in the 1990s and developed into a series of novels and short stories published from 2001 to 2005. The coining of the term is attributed to China Mieville. In 2002, he released the steampunk fantasy novel Scar, but insisted that it was a work of a new genre - "the new weird."

“What was really interesting to me about the idea of ​​Control was that we took the genre of the new weird. It is a literary genre that takes the approach that we deal with things that we do not fully understand. What is happening cannot be satisfactorily explained and conveyed to you in a 'Here's the answer and here's what it's all about,'" Lake said. However, this does not mean that the team itself did not understand what the game was about. The purpose of the genre is a limited presentation of what is happening. Remedy Entertainment had to balance between hints and direct answers so that players could formulate their own theories without going too far.

“I realized that my interest piques when something is done well and I feel like I'm not smart enough to understand everything. I know that for some people this is a complete failure. But for me it's interesting. Sometimes it even somehow draws me to David Lynch and his work. [His work] is very dream-like. When I watch the latest season of Twin Peaks, let's say I really enjoy watching it. I feel like I’m in good hands,” added Sam Lake. He cited life itself as an example - there are not many ready-made answers in it. Lake also feels this in art. If it is of high quality, then you do not need to explain its meaning. However, in the opposite case, doubts creep in about the meaning that the author put into his work. In Control, Lake and his team tried to balance things out without disrupting the player's perception. Judging by the fact that the project nominated for the Game of the Year award at the annual Game Awards, they did it.

Control was released on August 27, 2019 on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The story of the game is not over yet - for 2020 already announced two story additions, one of which is related to Alan Wake.
