Sony confirms it owns the rights to the Sunset Overdrive franchise

During gamescom 2019, Sony announced purchase of Insomniac Games. Then the question arose about who now owns the intellectual property of the studio. At that time, there was no clear answer from the Japanese company, but now the head of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, has clarified the situation.

In an interview with a Japanese resource Inside gameson which refers Push Square, Yoshida stated that the company now owns the rights to Sunset Overdrive. The director also expressed a desire to see a sequel to the game, but its production is not currently in the plans of Sony. The head of SIE Worldwide Studios did not specify whether a sequel will be released, but only said that he was looking forward to future updates from Insomniac Games.

The rights to the Sunset Overdrive franchise have always been retained by Insomniac Games, as the studio previously stated, but with the transition under the wing of Sony, the latter also got its intellectual property. With the Ratchet & Clank and Resistance series, everything was clear from the very beginning - these are PlayStation exclusives, the rights to them are held by a Japanese company.
