In Russia, work on the jetpack project to rescue astronauts has been suspended. This is reported by the RIA Novosti online publication, referring to information received from the management of the Zvezda Research and Production Enterprise.
We are talking about the creation of a special device designed to ensure the rescue of astronauts who have moved away from a spacecraft or station at a dangerous distance. In such a situation, the satchel will help the person return to the orbital complex.
βA few years ago, on our own initiative, we began to develop a new system, made its layout. Due to the lack of funding, the work has been frozen until better times, βthe Zvezda NPP said.
Thus, it is not yet clear when a rescue space pack can be created. It is obvious that the development of such a device with proper funding will take more than one year.
At best, Russian cosmonauts will receive a novelty in the second half of the next decade.
