Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Yale University have developed a robotic method for sorting waste and garbage.

Unlike technologies that use computer vision for sorting, the RoCycle system developed by scientists relies solely on tactile sensors and soft robotics, allowing glass, plastic and metal to be identified and sorted only by touch.

"Using computer vision alone will not solve the problem of making machines human, so being able to use tactile input is vital," MIT professor Daniela Rus told VentureBeat in an email.

Determining the type of material by touch is much more reliable than using visual recognition alone, the researchers say.
