Toyota plans to build a city of the future in Japan

At the annual CES 2020 exhibition taking place these days, representatives of Toyota Motor Corp. announced their intention to build a prototype of a “city of the future” in Japan. It will become a kind of laboratory for testing autonomous vehicles, smart homes, artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies.

Toyota plans to build a city of the future in Japan

Toyota's future city will be called Woven City. The name of the city reflects the past of the Toyota company, which began its history with the production of weaving machines. The city will be built on the site of an old automobile plant, which is scheduled to close at the end of this year. At the initial stage, the city will be able to accommodate about 2000 residents and researchers involved in the development of advanced technologies. Toyota is not disclosing costs for the project, which is scheduled to begin next year.

It was announced that the Danish architect Bjarke Ingels will design the city structures. The architect's company was involved in the design of the second World Trade Center in New York and the offices of the technology giant Google in Silicon Valley and London.

Toyota says the company is open to partnerships with other manufacturers who want to use the project as a testing ground for new technologies. This means that, as part of the implementation of this project, other companies interested in building a “city of the future” will be able to join the Japanese corporation in the future.
