Battle Royale spending: Fortnite is number one, but numbers are falling

In a new report published last week, analytics firm Edison Trends revealed the results of a sample of "anonymous and aggregated electronic cash receipts from millions of consumers in the United States" to assess sales trends for the most popular online games, mostly in the battle royale genre.

According to the analysis, Fortnite sales have dropped significantly (52%) since the second quarter of 2018. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, on the other hand, only dropped about 2% in the same time period. Apex Legends stays stable at the same level.

Consumer spending on online gaming has fluctuated dramatically over the past two years. In Fortnite, for example, they grew by an average of 110% per month from November 2017 to May 2018, but have generally declined since then. However, the project had its best month in December 2018 with 20% more consumer spending compared to the previous high in July 2018.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds peaked in December 2017, about nine months after launch. Spending has continued to decline, but has remained more stable than in Fortnite since the start of 2018.

Costs in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 almost caught up with Fortnite after the release of the shooter in October 2018. In July 2019, players spent roughly twice as much on Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 as they did on PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. As for Apex Legends, the game quickly outperformed Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and PUBG, and is currently in second place behind Fortnite, albeit by a significant margin.

The study also examined user loyalty by analyzing repeat purchases. In this regard, Apex Legends was ahead of the competition as 62% of players who purchased something in June did so again the following month, while Fortnite stalled at 49%.
