Ubisoft will try to make their games more diverse

Many people know the joke that all Ubisoft games are the same. Of course, this is not entirely true. But it's clear that the French publisher is following the mold of its big-budget open-world games, based on the initial success of Assassin's Creed on the latest generation of consoles. But why not? Millions of sales have shown that at first it all worked great. However, now, after a tough 2019, Ubisoft is thinking of a bit of a shake-up in terms of their approach.

According to a new Video Games Chronicle publication, the publisher is revisiting the goals of its editorial team in Paris, which works with all development teams on game design. The idea is to make Ubisoft products more diverse.

It is no coincidence that this happens after the ambitious Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint  и Tom Clancy's The Division 2 failed, and Ubisoft delayed the launch of major blockbusters like Watch Dogs: Legion and Rainbow Six Quarantine. In a statement to VGC, Ubisoft said, "We are strengthening our editorial team to be more agile and more effective in supporting our development teams around the world in creating the best possible gaming experience."

News that Ubisoft's new and improved editorial team will try to help make games more diverse reflects comments from Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot, who said back in October 2019 that Breakpoint's poor performance was due, among other things, to a lack of novelty factors. .

VGC said VPs will be given more autonomy over the game series they manage and will be able to make their own design decisions. In the past, one or two senior editors made all the decisions, so users could see similar features in many of Ubisoft's high-budget titles.

Ubisoft appears to be undergoing major changes within its walls that are leading to game cancellations and/or a new direction for key projects - the company is obviously going to be head-to-toe with the launch of the next generation of consoles. It is unlikely that the upcoming and as yet unannounced game in the Assassin's Creed endless series will suddenly be very different from previous projects. But let's hope that Ubisoft's high-budget projects will now introduce non-standard and risky mechanics or innovations. And let's hope we don't talk about something like battle royale mixes and auto chess in the Might & Magic universe or about the next mobile rethinking of "Heroes".
