Ubisoft speeds up Rainbow Six Siege on PC with Vulkan

Ubisoft has released patch 4.3 for Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, which adds support for Vulkan. This API promises to improve graphics performance by providing more direct access to the GPU and reducing reliance on the CPU. So the performance improvement will be more noticeable on systems with a weak CPU.

Notably, Ubisoft evaluated both DirectX 12 and Vulkan, but opted for the latter as internal benchmarks showed better CPU performance on Vulkan. The key technical features that Vulkan brings are Dynamic Texture Indexing, Render Target Aliasing, and Asynchronous Computing.

Dynamic texture indexing helps reduce CPU overhead by reducing the number of draw calls. With Render Target Aliasing, Ubisoft has implemented dynamic resolution on PC based on GPU workload. Finally, asynchronous computing allows you to perform computing and graphics tasks on the graphics card, providing more tools and opportunities for optimization.

β€œThe Vulkan API has advantages over DirectX 11 that will help Rainbow Six Siege improve graphics performance. Vulkan will help gamers keep their CPU and GPU costs down, while also bringing support for more modern features that pave the way for exciting new things in the future. With the release of patch 4.3, wider testing of Vulkan on PC begins,” the company said.

It would be interesting to see the results of the implementation of the Vulkan API in such resource-intensive Ubisoft games as Assassin's Creed Origins, Assassin's Creed Odyssey ΠΈ Watchdogs 2, which could get a noticeable performance boost. It is curious that in The Division 2 Ubisoft has opted for DirectX 12.
