Recently, Mike Gabriel, one of the Debian maintainers, worked with the folks at the UBports Foundation to "package" the Unity 8 desktop for Debian.
Why do this?
The main advantage of Unity 8 is convergence: a single code base for all platforms. It looks equally good on desktops, tablets and smartphones. Debian currently does not have a single out-of-the-box solution for tablets and smartphones.
Progress does not stand still!
All information about the process of adaptation of Unity 8 and Mir in Debian can be tracked on the Planet Debian website, on Mike Gabriel's personal blog or on his Mastodon page.
