Russia begins development of advanced hybrid power plants for the Arctic

Ruselectronics holding, which is part of the state corporation Rostec, has begun the creation of autonomous combined power plants for use in the Arctic zone of Russia.

We are talking about equipment that can generate electricity from renewable sources. In particular, three self-contained power modules are being designed, including in various layouts an electrical energy storage device based on lithium-ion batteries, a photovoltaic generating system, a wind generator and (or) a floating mobile microhydroelectric power station.

In addition, the equipment will include a backup diesel generator, which will allow electricity to be generated even if natural factors do not come to the rescue.

“The equipment is designed to supply power to small and temporary settlements, oil and gas fields, polar meteorological stations, telecommunications and navigation facilities in areas with decentralized power supply,” Rostec notes.

It is argued that the designed power plants in Russia have no analogues. All autonomous power modules are placed in containers of arctic design.

Pilot operation of the equipment will begin in 2020 or 2021. The pilot project will be implemented on the territory of Yakutia.
