Video of the day: night shows with hundreds of glowing drones are gaining popularity in China

Over the past couple of years, there have been some impressive light shows in the US using masses of drones working closely together. They were mainly carried out by companies such as Intel and Verity Studios (for example, at the Olympic Games in South Korea). But lately, it seems like the most advanced and animated drone light shows are coming from China. Such popularity is not surprising, since the country is considered the birthplace of fireworks.

China is famous for its consumer drones. First of all, thanks to DJI, although there are dozens of brands that are noticeably less well known. Nowadays, many major events in the Middle Kingdom are accompanied by the use of hundreds of coordinated drones in the sky. It must be said that this is not such a trivial task, because the positioning accuracy of modern consumer quadcopters, based on GPS, can reach 5–10 meters - too much for such a presentation, where movements need to be verified with almost centimeter precision. In other words, drones must be equipped with additional positioning systems like RTK.

For example, at the opening of the recent air show in China in the city of Nanchang, there was a very impressive light show using 800 drones. The public was shown hieroglyphs gathering in the air in the night sky, as well as images of various flying equipment such as helicopters, fighter jets and airliners (it’s a pity that the resolution is low, but magic really happens in the sky):

Here are some more high-quality light shows using hundreds of drones that recently took place in China:

Another clip is a report from a show that featured 300 glowing firewood gathering into various shapes (including the patriotic message "I love you China") in the night sky over Hangzhou in eastern China as part of celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Republic (PRC):

And the following video shows the coordinated work of 526 drones in Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou province in southwest China:

On May 15, a light show featuring 500 drones took place in Tianjin to coincide with the opening of the World AI Congress, which was attended by more than 1400 artificial intelligence (AI) researchers from more than 40 countries:

And in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, also in honor of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, a show was staged using 999 drones (and in 2016, a world record was an Intel achievement with her 500 drones):

In general, it is quite possible that soon in China the tradition of fireworks will gradually flow into a more impressive tradition of spectacular light shows using huge masses of glowing high-speed drones.
