Last year, Yandex held a demonstration of its Autopilot at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and made a big impression on the audience, including famous blogger Marques Brownlee. This year, from January 5 to January 10, the company also showed its developments in the field of robotic cars.

This time, the total mileage of the company’s robotic cars during the preparation for the event and 6 days of the exhibition was more than 7000 km, and the cars moved along the city streets not only completely autonomously, but also without a test engineer at the wheel caring for passengers.

Now in the state of Nevada, over two hundred self-propelled vehicles are driving laps on public roads, but a test engineer is always behind the wheel. So Yandex's self-driving cars became the first on the state's roads without a driver at the wheel. Moreover, the cars moved around Las Vegas in a variety of conditions: during daylight and dark, during busy hours with heavy traffic, and even in the rain. The 6,7 km demonstration route included multi-lane sections, signalized and unsignalized intersections, complex turns with oncoming traffic and pedestrian crossings. Based on the results, we can say that the demonstration went well.

Over the 6 days of the exhibition, over a hundred different guests were able to ride in Yandex’s self-driving cars, including the Lieutenant Governor of Michigan, Garlin Gilchrist. This state has consistently demonstrated interest in developing driverless vehicle technology. In May 2019, Yandex became one of the winners state competition to provide autonomous taxi services to visitors to the 2020 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in June.

β€œWe were excited to showcase our vehicles again at CES in Las Vegas. Yandex has experience in operating unmanned vehicles without a person driving in Innopolis, but the opportunity to test our technology in new conditions is important to us. So far there are literally several places around the world where this is allowed, and it is important for us to use it. In addition, CES is a chance to show a large number of people in practice what our technology is capable of,” said Dmitry Polishchuk, head of the company’s autonomous vehicles department. The next showcase will obviously be the aforementioned NAIAS 2020 Auto Show.
