The new company, with offices in Munich and Wolfsburg, will be led by Alex Hitzinger, member of the Volkswagen board of directors and senior vice president of autonomous driving. Volkswagen Autonomy faces the daunting task of developing and implementing autonomous driving systems from Level 4 into the company's vehicles.

“We will continue to leverage synergies across the group's brands to bring down the cost of self-driving cars, high-performance computers and sensors,” Hitzinger said. “We plan to start commercializing autonomous driving on a large scale around the middle of the next decade.”

As part of this expansion, Volkswagen plans to establish self-driving car divisions in Silicon Valley and China in 2020 and 2021, respectively.
