Volkswagen and Chinese startup NIU have decided to join forces to produce the first electric scooter for the German manufacturer. This was reported on Monday by the newspaper Die Welt without citing sources.
The companies plan to mass-produce the Streetmate electric scooter, a prototype of which Volkswagen showed more than a year ago at the Geneva Motor Show. The electric scooter is capable of speeds up to 45 km/h and has a range of up to 60 km on a single battery charge.
The Chinese startup NIU, founded in 2014, has already delivered about 640 electric scooters to the market in China and other countries. In the last year alone, NIU's sales have grown nearly 80%. According to NIU, its market share in China's electric scooter market is about 40%.
